General Information about Acupuncture
The stimulation of acupuncture points, primarily with needles, is probably the oldest and most widespread healing method in the world. The best known is classical Chinese acupuncture, the so-called body acupuncture. By stimulating precisely defined points on the skin, disorders throughout the entire organism, including internal organs, can be alleviated or even eliminated.
Acupuncture Points & Meridians
The points are located on pathways known as meridians. According to traditional Chinese belief, the life energy 'Qi' with its components Yin and Yang circulates in them.
These two life-sustaining forces act as opposing poles simultaneously in the body.
Their balance represents the ideal state of health; their imbalance leads to complaints and illness.
If you look at the meridian pathways running through the body, it becomes clear that acupuncture points far from the actual site of pain or illness also play an important role in treatment. The energy of the entire meridian as a functional circuit with its associated organs must be stabilized to restore balance and thus effectively treat the disease.
What exactly is acupuncture?
Of all the therapeutic methods of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), acupuncture has become the most established and further developed in the Western healthcare system. Its special advantage: it is not only effective but also virtually free of side effects.
The mode of action of acupuncture has been intensively researched scientifically for years, and many connections have already been clarified. In contrast, the traditional Chinese understanding is that the entire organism is traversed by a dense network of channels (meridians) through which life energy flows. These life-sustaining forces are simultaneously, but also as opposing poles, active in the body. Their complete balance in the organism represents the ideal state of health. An imbalance leads to physical and psychological symptoms and, in the long run, to illness.
By stimulating certain points on these meridians, the flow of energy can be regulated—too little or, conversely, too much Yin and Yang is brought back into balance. This eliminates or alleviates disorders within the body.
Example: Ear Acupuncture
The surface of the ear forms a reflex zone on which all organs of the body are represented. Examination of the ear reflex zone provides insights for the therapy of pain, complaints, or functional disorders of the entire organism. Due to the short reflex pathways to the brain, ear acupuncture treatment produces a particularly rapid and effective response. Interference fields can also be precisely identified and treated with acupuncture using the special BAHR method.
Recognizing and Treating Interference Fields with Acupuncture
At first glance, interference fields may not seem related to the disease process, and the patient may not even notice them. Nevertheless, they can negatively influence the organism to the extent that it is more prone to illness or that even the correct therapy for an existing disease does not work. For example, dead or inflamed teeth can develop into interference fields.
Inflammations, especially in the head area (tonsils, sinuses, etc.), scars—especially if they run over meridians—or toxic burdens (for example, amalgam).
How does acupuncture work?
It has a healing effect on disturbed organ functions and relieves symptoms even in cases of advanced structural damage. It effectively stimulates the body's self-healing powers and contributes to mental and physical health: a holistic therapy for the 'whole person.'
Effect, e.g., Ear Acupuncture
Acupuncture, and especially ear acupuncture, makes use of the body's control center. All stimuli triggered by acupuncture reach the addressed body parts via the diencephalon. Ear acupuncture is particularly effective due to the close connection between the auricle and the pain centers of the brain. Acupuncture mainly has a healing effect on disturbed organ function. However, if there is already advanced destruction of structures, acupuncture can only provide relief of symptoms or pain.
When performed by qualified doctors, acupuncture is a virtually risk- and side-effect-free treatment method. Ideally, acupuncture and conventional medicine complement each other in diagnosis and therapy. It can optimally supplement conventional medical therapies and is suitable, for example, as a diagnostic method for unclear complaints.
In any case, a thorough medical history and clinical diagnosis by the doctor must be carried out to determine the individual indication for acupuncture.
Rapid relaxation up to a floating lightness often occurs immediately as an instant effect. Some patients feel immediate relief of their symptoms after treatment, while for others it takes a little longer for noticeable reactions to occur. Usually, at least 4-5 sessions at weekly intervals are needed before a lasting effect is achieved; in most cases, about ten sessions are necessary in total.
When does acupuncture help?
Acupuncture has proven itself in many diseases over centuries. It can harmonize disturbed functions and remove blockages. Acupuncture is particularly effective for pain, allergies, and frequently recurring colds—and all this practically without side effects.
